Builder.io says AI needs prebuilt components, not invented layouts

Builder.io's argument is that pure text-to-code Generative UI is a dead end, since generating fresh markup on every prompt produces 30-second spinners and broken layouts. The fix it proposes is text-to-hydration: an AI that arranges pre-built "elastic primitives" rather than inventing screens from scratch, with designers writing machine-legible rules (compression limits, when a chart should render at all) directly into component schemas instead of Figma prose. It's still a pitch for Builder's own framework, but the underlying claim, that design systems need explicit programmatic constraints because AI has no taste to fall back on, holds regardless of whose tool implements it.
