Deshmukh: agentic AI needs five UX patterns, not just a chat window

Tushar Deshmukh, writing in UX Magazine, argues that agentic AI breaks the basic assumption behind every graphical interface since the command line: that the user initiates and the system responds. His fix is five patterns any agentic product needs, planning visibility, tool-use disclosure, memory surfacing, workflow tracking, and recovery routing, plus an "autonomy slider" so delegation isn't a binary switch. He cites Gartner's projection that 40% of enterprise apps will carry task-specific agents by end of 2026, up from under 5% in 2025, and EY's finding that 24% of Indian business leaders are already deploying agentic AI. The practical test he offers is concrete: can a user see what an agent intends to do before it acts, and undo it fast if it's wrong.
